ESTUARY

The idea of this toy book can be attributed to the tradition of beguiling monotony of the road with uncomplicated occupations, which are, actually, playing games (cards, crosswords, charades, bouts-rimés) and writing (travelogues, letters, journals). We combine those occupations and suggest that the player/reader should make up (like a jigsaw puzzle) the map of the Volga estuary and restore/create the text from the fragments of famous travellers’ observations pertaining to the Volga, which are printed on little cards. The keys to this will be halves of the fish from the illustrations in old encyclopaedias and of the mermaids from carved window ledges that decorated houses in Nizhny Novgorod oblast in the 19th century, which should be matched. Just as well, the process can be made easier by using erudition and the sense of style.
