Aleksandr FLORENSKY

RUSSIAN ALBUM

ART ON SALE – FALL TO!

There existed in Russia an amazing genre, a peculiar «vernacular art» that appeared first earlier than the 1917 Revolution, burst into full bloom in the 1950s, and faded away before the beginning of the 1960s. I mean here copies of well-known paintings made by the members of the Russian “Peredvizhnik” movement. As a rule, they are painted with oil on canvas, oilcloth or cardboard (gold-framed replications of the same paintings is another matter). The most frequent motives are (basing on my own observations):
The Ninth Wave by Aivazovsky,
Noon in Italy by Brullow
Alyonushka by Vasnetsov
A Knight at the Crossroads by Vasnetsov
Ivan-Tzarevich on the Grey Wolf by Vasnetsov
Three Heroes by Vasnetsov
A Moonlight Night by Kramskoy
An Unknown by Kramskoy
Children Running from an Approaching Thunderstorm by Makovsky
Hunters at Rest by Perov
Rye by Shishkin

I have been collecting «vernacular» copies of the well-known Russian paintings for many years, and in 1994 I exhibited my own paintings and drawings, which were my own versions of those favourites. That exhibition was called «The Russian Album».

In the 21st century I use the most modern of the means I can access to replicate my favourite paintings: silk screening *) and Flash animation**) on the Internet. In terms of the number of copies, it has really become a «vernacular» art.
